One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk into Trendy Specs Optique in Fairlawn’s Merchant Square is the John Varvatos display featuring the band members from Kiss. Photos of the group shown sporting the latest frames from the famed designer are artfully arranged in a rich cherry display cabinet. This fashion-forward, boutique vibe is just one of the changes that optometrist Dr. Dan Uzl and licensed opticians Walter Paris and Debbie Graham made when they took over the space about a year ago.mimi-1

“This location was formerly occupied by another optical store before we came in, but that’s where the similarities end,” Walter explains, referring to a previous shop that closed its doors after just a few months. “We learned that the space was available and knew that our idea for a trendy optical boutique fit well with the theme of Merchant’s Square plaza.”

The trio also knew that in order to put their own mark on the local optical scene, they needed to make dramatic differences that would be felt by patients and clients. The partners began by overhauling the interior, including new flooring, lighting, and the addition of a dramatic, bubbling water sculpture behind the reception desk. The center of the room includes space for trying on frames and personalizing fit. They also installed new, high-tech equipment so that Dr. Uzl could conduct his exams using state-of-the-art technology.

Fashion Meets Service
Once the interior was completed, the team brought in designer frames like Gucci, Polo, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Nine West, Coach, Tom Ford, and more. And because they recognize the evolving tastes of kids today, the group decided to feature more sophisticated frames for the younger set, like Lucky Brand and Ray Ban.mimi-kiss

“Kids don’t want to wear cartoon characters on their glasses once they reach a certain age,” inserts a bubbly Kari Erdman, a licensed optician with eight years of experience who serves as Trendy Specs’ manager. “We made sure to include quality options for kids who appreciate style.”

“This is a boutique environment,” Kari adds. “That means our focus is on providing one-on-one attention to our clients. We don’t treat you like a number. When you visit us for frames, I’ll personally sit down with you to help you choose the right style for your face, your lifestyle, and your budget. I take my time with clients so they leave feeling excited about their new glasses. Fit is a very important part of the process and we specialize in that. We can fit glasses for the entire family—mom, dad, the kids, grandparents, everybody.”

And Dr. Uzl is just as passionate about going the extra mile for his patients.

“We don’t double and triple book our exams; that means I have plenty of time to spend with each patient,” he explains. “And I conduct the entire exam from start to finish. You aren’t handed off from one person to the next before getting to see me.”

Dr. Uzl says that his exams include an ocular health assessment of all eye structures from front to back, peripheral vision testing, and a contact lens evaluation if needed. In fact, Trendy Specs offers the latest in high-tech, custom-fit contact lenses for daily, two-week, or monthly wear, plus multi-focal and gas permeable lenses—and they all come with the latest manufacturer’s rebates.mimi-store

“We establish relationships,” Dr. Uzl stresses. “Everyone’s needs are different and there isn’t anything we haven’t come in contact with over the years. Even special requests, challenging cases, and those who are hard to fit have a place here. We can often leverage our relationships with manufacturer’s reps to get you exactly what you need.”

Because Trendy Specs is on the leading edge of the eye industry, the team offers digital progressive lenses. “They’re digitally custom manufactured for each person,” Dr. Uzl explains. “As a result, your vision isn’t limited. You can see from edge to edge. These lenses eliminate the head movement that’s necessary when you look through other progressive lenses.”

Don’t let the term “boutique” fool you. Trendy Specs’ prices are surprisingly affordable, including frames, lenses, and the exam. Priced at just $84, a Trendy Specs eye exam is as comprehensive as they come. “The term ‘boutique’ refers to our service, not our prices,” adds Walter.

And forget about ordering glasses from the Internet; it’s impossible to get a proper fit.

“Today’s digital lenses are custom crafted specifically for your eyes,” Walter explains. “We incorporate into our measurements not just your prescription, but also your pupillary distance [the distance between your eyes], the position of the glasses on your face, and your unique needs. Maybe you sit at a computer all day and need a wider intermediate range, for example. We can do that.”

Speaking of computer usage, many Trendy Specs clients are opting for a separate pair of glasses dedicated for long hours in front of a computer screen. In addition, improving your vision and protecting your eyes by wearing a pair of polarized, prescription sunglasses is a must these days, even in winter and on cloudy days. It’s the smart, responsible thing to do, Dr. Uzl notes.

Years of Experience
Trendy Specs Optique may be new to the Fairlawn area, but Dr. Uzl, Walter, Debbie, and Kari have over 70 years of combined eye care experience. Dr. Uzl has more than 14 years in the eye care industry, Walter has over 30 years, Debbie has over 20, and Kari boasts eight.

Trendy Specs accepts most insurance plans, including EyeMed, VSP, Aetna, Medical Mutual, Davis Vision, and more, plus payment via HSA.

And you don’t need to be a patient of Dr. Uzl’s in order to purchase glasses. Simply bring in your current prescription or call to schedule a new eye exam.
